With all the choice available to the consuming public in terms of small hatchback models, it’s no great and ghastly surprise that some people become confused. I know from personal experience that when you are looking for a car in this saturated marketplace, it can be a bit of a mine field. I did what most sensible people do and endeavoured to test drive as many different models as possible and try to keep track of which ones were superior. This is a time consuming task and one that will inevitably end up in many wasted hours sat in cars that are fantastically disappointing.
After what seemed like a life time of visiting dealerships and trying cars, I eventually stumbled upon a model that gave me what can be approximated to a feeling of joy. That just so happened to be a Volkswagen Polo. The reasons why it was considerably better than the vast majority of cars I had tested are hard to pin down though. Firstly, the 1.4 Litre engine wasn’t the most powerful or economical engine I had experienced and the miles per gallon was considerably less than say the Corsa or Fiesta or a lot of the competitiom. Secondly, it wasn’t the sleekest or sportiest model available, an honour which could have easily gone to any number of the supermini competition. Finally, it wasn’t the cheapest model by a long stretch and actually topped my budget. So why did this car appeal to me in such a way?
Well, what struck me fundamentally about the VW Polo was something that could be closely approximated to refinement I suppose. Where as a vast majority of the small hatchbacks are aiming for the teenagers and young adults, the VW Polo is a car that holds itself with a little more elegance I suppose. The handling, comfort and performance are all amazingly functional, but restrained and toned down.
I would thoroughly recommend the VW Polo to any drivers who are looking for a car that displays its credentials in performance terms, rather than wearing them on its sleeve. It really is a perfect drive.
